How to Play
We've had a really good time with this. I tend to like more serious games and generally would not try a party game like this, but have been really happy with other recent offerings from this publisher and this seemed like a more toned-down party game in regard to silly antics. Sure enough, this game does ask you to be a bit silly, but overall the requests are far more reasonable than others I've played. Everything we've seen should be doable by pretty much anyone as long as you're willing to say things or do some very minor actions. Everyone is saying goofy stuff constantly, so no one gets singled out, and the actions are pretty funny, like "when you draw a card make it take off like a rocket ship". Our most recent game was with a full 8 players and it was pretty chaotic, but there were lots of laughs. The phrases and actions generally had some good humor to them, which I appreciated. You can have up to three items in the middle affecting all players and up to four in front of each person. It's a lot to remember, but certainly not overwhelming and most you only need to worry about on your turn or during specific actions. It's just enough that it's manageable but also easy to miss something if you get distracted. The one take away we've had after playing was to better define some of the turn phases. Most of the cards say to do something "At the start of your turn", "When drawing a card", "When reading a card", "When playing a card", or "At the end of your turn". There's some others, but those feel like the main ones. Since you're trying to catch other players when they've missed something, knowing when they think they're done with an action is helpful. We've started defining exact parameters for each so everyone know what you're currently doing. To help with this we added a token that can be passed around to the active player. Our phases:"Start of your turn" = after the token is passed to you but before you draw a card"When you draw a card" = Picking up a card until your start to read out loud"When you read a card" = starting to read out loud until the card is played to the table"When you play a card" = playing the card to the table until you remove your hand from the card"End of your turn" = after playing a card until you finish passing the active player tokenYou also have to decide how strict to be on enforcing the rules. We were pretty loose, especially with more socially anxious players who didn't get into the silliness as much. There's also a degree of needing to police yourself a bit - if you miss something and no one notices, you're fine, but if someone calls you on something and you did forget, just go with it - it's just a silly game. It's also good to set some parameters on how long folks have to enforce a rule - it should be called out pretty much immediately to count.Overall, looking forward to more plays of this with more groups. I really appreciate that I finally have a game that brings in the silliness but still appeals to a more serious gamer like myself. Can't promise it will be a hit for everyone, but for us it was a good party game for people who don't normally like party games.
